lowercase began as a nod to the music movement by the same name, and as a way to shape media for brands and artists with a similar understated intent.
Coined by artist Steve Roden in 2001, ‘lowercase music’ first emerged through forms of paper, a composition created entirely from modulated sounds of book pages being handled. The genre shares kinship with movements like musique concrète, mid-century minimalist experiments, and the practice of deep listening.
Roden called it “a certain sense of quiet and humility…” something that does not shout, but must be discovered.
the intention is to bring this sentiment into visual works, with an emphasis on experimentation and cinematic storytelling.
